Weinreb 45/491; Roberts/Trent, page 297. - First French edition of *Experimental Enquiry Concerning the Natural Powers of Wind and Water to turn Mills and other Machines ...* (London 1794). - This work is considered a milestone in the history of experimentation with models in the technical sciences. In 1752-53, Smeaton (1724-1792) had experimented with overshot and undershot waterwheels and discovered the superiority of the former. In 1759, he reviewed the prevailing theories of windmills and provided valuable insights into the efficient design of windmill sails (cf. Karmarsch, *Geschichte der Technologie*, pages 196 and 201). 'Girard's enthusiastic translation of Smeaton's work early in the 19th century gave it a place of prominence in French as well as English engineering literature' (Rouse/Ince, pp. 121ff. with 2 illustrations, here p. 123). - The engravings show the experimental models. - Half-title page with a monogrammed dedication in the translator Girard's (1765-1863) own hand. Spine endpaper stamped by the Royal Meteorological Society in 1963. - Some light spotting, a few minor edge tears.
