Böckler, GA Theatrum machinarum novum, exhibens aquarias, alatas, jumentarias, manuarias; pedibus, ac ponderibus versatiles, plures et diversas molas ... Operâ Henrici Schmitz. Nuremberg, Fürst Witwe u. Erben, 1686. 3 (of 5) leaves, 55 pages. With engraved title by V. Sommer after Böckler and 154 copperplate engravings. Folio. Contemporary leather binding with gilt spine (scuffed and bumped, spine restored). VD17 12:654543E.- Second Latin edition (first 1662).- The book contains 154 copperplate engravings of quite varying quality, which are mainly based on the work of Jacopo Strada. In addition, Böckler also drew on the works of Agostino Ramelli, Vittorio Zonca, and Salomon de Caus. Despite its limited originality, Böckler's book was apparently quite successful on the market (Hilz: Theatrum Machinarum, p. 102). - Georg Andreas Böckler (1617-1687) worked as a master builder in Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Nuremberg, and Ansbach. - The engraved title page with German text from the first edition of 1661 and with a small mounted Latin title label (dated 1662). - Provenance: Endpaper with purchase inscription in an old hand '729 / vendu à la vente de vandermuelen(?) 1826 pour 1200 fl' as well as a further entry on the frontispiece; Zisska & Kistner Auction 31/1450, since then private collection, Northern Germany. - Without the leaf Preface and the first leaf of the index. - Outer edges slightly browned, partly slightly damp-stained in the lower third, copper title reinforced and edged at the hinge.
