Sabin 78971 and STC 22175. - Famous answer and rebuttal to the treatise 'Mare liberum' by the legal scholar Hugo Grotius, who is considered the founding father of the concept of international law. Grotius proclaimed the 'freedom of the seas', which should be open to all nations for free trade. The English polymath John Selden (1584-1654) opposed this for nationalist reasons and demanded sovereignty of the United Kingdom over all its surrounding seas.
