13 - Spohr Album containing 55 handwritten and signed autographs of famous 19th-century German composers and musicians, including Richard Wagner, Clara Schumann, Ludwig Spohr, and others. Almost all autographs contain their own compositions or musical staves. Most date from around 1879. Each sheet is a single leaf (approximately 11 x 18 cm to 31 x 24 cm), mounted at the corners onto album leaves (each 30.5 x 48 cm). Includes a handwritten table of contents and a portrait photograph of Louis Spohr. Loose in a contemporary red linen portfolio with elaborate gilt lettering on the front cover (scuffed, bumped). This album was the grand prize of a lottery in 1879. The proceeds from the sale of the lottery tickets helped finance a monument to Louis (also Ludwig) Spohr (composer, conductor, violin virtuoso, inventor of the baton, and renowned music teacher, 1784–1859). The monument was inaugurated in 1883. The idea and execution of this album came from Kassel magistrate Kühne, whose congratulatory letter to the winner, banker and patron (and purchaser of almost all the lottery tickets) Sigismund Kohnspeyer (married to opera singer Antonia Labitzky), is enclosed. This album has remained in the family's possession ever since and is being offered here for the first time. It includes autographs and scores by Richard Wagner (specifically for this album): 'The Flying Dutchman flew to Spohr, who gave him a sympathetic ear'; Clara Schumann; Louis Spohr; Johann Joseph Albert; Désirée Artôt de Padilla; Waldemar Bargiel; Jean Bott; Max Bruch; Ignatz Brüll; Otto Goldschmidt & Jenny Lind; Eduard Grell; Eugen Gura; Stephan Heller; Alfred Jaell; Friedrich Joachim; Friedrich Kücken; Theodor Kullack; August [and Joseph] Labitzky; Robert Radecke; Carl Reinecke; Emile Sauret; Franz Suppé; Wilhelm Taubert; Zelia Trebelli; Georg Vierling; Theodor Wachtel; Marie Wilt et al.
