Stanislas SLAWINSKI (Kraków, 1956) The Isle of the Dead Oil on hardboard Signed and dated "2000" in the lower right corner H_50 cm W_61 cm The work is inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s series of paintings, “Die Toteninsel,” painted between 1880 and 188X and passed down to the current owner Provenance: The artist’s studio Then passed down to the current owner Trained in fine arts in Poland, Stanislas Slawinski, born in Kraków in 1956, devotes himself to the restoration of the facades of medieval monuments in Kraków and Bielsko-Biała, in Silesia. His classically styled work is inspired by his studies of architecture from Poland’s Golden Age and his research into the medieval treasures he appraised during archaeological excavations at Rynek in the Warsaw countryside. His compositions are informed by his meditation on the Gospels and the great classical works of Polish art. The landscapes take on whimsical forms that reveal Slavic irony and melancholy; themes of the desert and a humanity in spiritual decline are punctuated by allusions to the Book of Revelation.
