UNKNOWN ITALIAN BAROQUE PAINTER Francis of Paola (1416-1507) and the Miracle of the Young Stag Oil on canvas, relined (relining is detached at the lower right), 18th c. 101 x 75 cm In the painting, an angel at the top presents the motto of St. Francis of Paola: Charitas = Charity. The scene below depicts the miracle in which the saint rescues and protects a young deer or stag from approaching hunters and their hounds. According to legend, the animal fled from the hunters to the saint's monastery or hermitage, where he placed it under his protection.
