17th-century London cast pewter flagon. Recovered from the archaeological site of Port Royal, Jamaica, the vessel is a historical artifact from the merchant hub submerged during the catastrophic earthquake of June 7, 1692. The piece is reportedly from the collection of marine archaeologist Robert Marx and was subsequently held in the collection of Bob Page. The flagon is constructed with a cylindrical body featuring a stepped, molded base and a flat-topped, circular lid. It is fitted with a scrolled handle and a decorative trifid thumbpiece attached to a three-part hinge. The overall surface exhibits heavy dark oxidation and a pitted texture characteristic of long-term marine submersion in silty mud. The interior floor displays significant pitting and mineral encrustation. Marked on the underside with an impressed mark reading LONDON ENGLAND beneath an eroded circular Tudor rose device. 6 1/8" H x 4 3/8" diameter. From the Bob Page collection Peter bought. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: The flagon exhibits significant surface oxidation, pitting, and mineral encrustation consistent with archaeological recovery from a marine environment. There is severe pitting and localized material loss on the interior base. The hinge remains intact but shows significant wear and evidence of historical reinforcement. The metal displays an uneven dark patina with scattered scratches and small dents throughout. NOTICE TO BIDDERS: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition.
