Laminated wood decorative paddle oar with arrowhead pommel. The piece features a distinct vertical striping pattern created by alternating tones of light and dark wood species throughout the blade and shaft. The wide, flat blade terminates in a rounded lower edge, while the upper portion narrows sharply into an elongated, tapering shaft. The handle end is accented by a carved, stylized arrowhead pommel terminal. The smooth surface features a clear finish highlighting the natural grain variations of the contrasting wood strips. 94" L x 25 3/4" W x 1/2" D. A personal note from Wendy Benchley: “This is a steering paddle from Papua New Guinea. It was so gorgeous, Peter and I had it sent home to Princeton, where it resided in our living room for many years.” From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: The paddle displays significant structural wear, highlighted by a prominent vertical split along the lamination line extending from the upper blade into the lower portion of the shaft. Additional fine cracks and checking are present along the wood grain of the shaft. The arrowhead pommel and upper shaft show visible blue scuff marks and white paint transfer discoloration. The outer edges of the blade exhibit scattered nicks, dings, small chips, and perimeter finish loss. Light surface soiling and overall finish wear are present throughout.
