MCA promotional newsprint advertisement for Jaws (Universal, 1975), published in the July 10, 1975 edition of The Wall Street Journal. The full-page layout, titled IT'S A MOVIE, TOO!, features Roger Kastel's (American, 1938-2023) theatrical poster art at center, surrounded by ten contemporary editorial cartoons commenting on the film's cultural impact by artists including McLeod, King, Hubenthal, Marlette, Herblock, MacNelly, Ficklen, Rosen, Conrad, and Renault. The piece was formerly displayed in author Peter Benchley's personal office, and bears a faint pencil inscription "Peter" in the upper left corner. The newsprint is mounted to a 1/8-inch thick foam board. 21 3/4" H x 14 1/2" W x 1/8" D. Universal's parent company, MCA, bought this full page in The Wall Street Journal on July 10, 1975, under a headline aimed squarely at investors: “IT'S A MOVIE, TOO!” The asterisk leads to the punch line. JAWS had opened in 464 theatres on June 20 and taken in $36,954,111 in just 17 days. It was the summer Hollywood discovered the blockbuster. Peter kept the page framed, and the newsprint has yellowed from decades in the sun. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: The newsprint displays overall toning and yellowing consistent with age. Minor edge wear and light surface creasing are present. A faint pencil inscription is visible at the upper left. The foam board verso displays significant paper and adhesive residue from previous mounting. NOTICE TO BIDDERS: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Photos are considered part of the condition report. Complete condition information is available by request, please request no later than 24 hours prior to the auction. All lots are offered and sold "as is", and Willow Auctions will not provide refunds based on condition. Timepiece movements, lighting and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated.
