Curiosities Peter collected over the years. A trio of commemorative and historical metal items comprising a Confederate States Navy sword belt buckle, a Lotos Club award, and a figural bovine medal. The two-piece Civil War period naval buckle is constructed of brass with a circular central plate featuring a relief design of a fouled anchor behind crossed cannons, bordered by the text CONFEDERATE STATES NAVY and thirteen stars within a laurel wreath. The reverse of the hook is impressed ISSAC & Co. The Lotos Club Award of Merit is a bronze oval plaque featuring the club's crest and foundation date of 1870. The third item is a brass-toned metal steer head medal suspended from a maroon grosgrain ribbon with a pin-back closure. A rectangular red pebble-grain box and a light blue Tiffany & Co. box are present. Buckle: 2 1/4" H x 4" L. Award: 3 1/2" H x 2 1/2" W. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: The belt buckle shows significant loss to the original gilding with a dark aged patina and areas of green verdigris oxidation on the reverse near the belt loop and hook. The Lotos Club medal exhibits light, even surface toning. The steer head medal displays minimal wear to the metal finish and light fraying at the edges of the ribbon.
