Pair of Federal Style electrified wall sconces featuring shield-shaped backplates and bird finials. The backplates are constructed with leaded metal frames inset with a mosaic of multi-paneled mirrored glass tiles. Each is surmounted by a cast metal bird finial with outspread wings, reminiscent of an eagle or phoenix. Needs rewiring. 16" H x 9 3/4" W x 5 1/4" D. These hung in the front hall of the Benchley home, beneath the collection of antique maps. From the personal collection of Peter Benchley (American, 1940-2006), acclaimed author of Jaws, accomplished diver, and prominent advocate for ocean and shark conservation. Proceeds from the Peter Benchley Collection will benefit five ocean conservation organizations: Peter Benchley Ocean Awards, WildAid, Beneath the Waves, Blue Frontier and Environmental Defense Fund. CONDITION: Fair condition. One candle arm is detached from the frame and both units have cut electrical wiring. The mirrored mosaic tiles show advanced deterioration including significant foxing, silvering loss, and dark mottling throughout. There are visible cracks and edge chips to several glass panels. The metal frames and finials exhibit surface oxidation, wear, and remnants of old solder from previous repair attempts. Needs rewiring. NOTICE TO BIDDERS: The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition. Photos are considered part of the condition report. Complete condition information is available by request, please request no later than 24 hours prior to the auction. All lots are offered and sold "as is", and Willow Auctions will not provide refunds based on condition. Timepiece movements, lighting and electrics have not been tested, and art has not been examined out of the frame unless otherwise stated.
