DANCE MASK Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. Guere ethnic group. 20th century. Polychrome wood. H.: approx. 40 cm. Dance mask with a human face featuring a large, slightly parted mouth with metal teeth, a large, flat nose, tubular eyes, and a domed forehead. The area surrounding the face is made of leather, fabric, and hair. These masks were used during funeral ceremonies and could also serve as “detective masks” to identify a person guilty of crimes.
