Standing bronze Buddha, Dvaravati period, central Thailand, 8th–11th century. H: 24 cm. Missing parts. Former French collection from the 1960s. Certificate of authenticity by Bernard Gomez, October 2021. Depicted in a frontal, hieratic pose, the Buddha wears the uttarāsaṅga monastic robe, which drapes over the body in long, simple folds. Both hands are raised in the double vitarka mudrā, a symbol of the teaching and transmission of the Dharma. The serene face, the hairstyle with tight curls, and the elongated forms of the body are characteristic of Dvaravati art, which is marked by its Indian heritage while developing a stylization unique to Southeast Asia.
