EPP, RUDOLF (1834–1910) “Peasant Girl at the Spinning Wheel.” Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: R. Epp. HxW: 80x60 cm (91/70 cm with frame). This work fits seamlessly into the characteristic oeuvre of Rudolf Epp, who, as a prominent representative of the Munich School, is known for his finely observed, intimate genre depictions of rural life. This painting depicts a young peasant girl in traditional dress at a spinning wheel inside a farmhouse parlor. With a keen sense of lighting and texture, the artist captures the domestic scene: Soft, diffused light highlights the subject’s features and accentuates the artisanal details of the wooden spinning wheel as well as the spun yarn. Characteristic of Epp’s work is the successful synthesis of academic realism and a narrative, idyllic mood. The subdued, earthy color palette underscores the intimate atmosphere of the room. In good condition, appropriate for its age. The canvas shows slight signs of aging in places, as well as minor paint loss in some areas. Restored.
