BY WERNER, ANTON (1843–1915) “Double Portrait of Two Members of the Reichstag, Berlin” 1890 Oil on panel. A profile portrait of two gentlemen in a formal side view, arranged one behind the other and looking to the right. The minimalist composition focuses entirely on the physiognomic characterization of the subjects and attests to Anton von Werner’s extraordinary skill as a portrait artist. With subtle realism and precise use of light, the figures’ individuality, social standing, and intellectual presence are emphasized. The subjects are two members of the German Reichstag during the time of Otto von Bismarck. The figure on the left is recorded as the director of the Holzmann paper mill in Karlsruhe. The work was created in 1890 and is exemplary of the representative portrait painting of the late 19th century in Wilhelmine Germany. HxW: 74/48 cm. Signs of age, paint flaking. Framed in a richly decorated, contemporary ornate frame. HxW: 102/77 cm.
