HOLLENBERG, FELIX (1868–1945) "Vast River Landscape with Poplars in the Evening Light," 1905, oil on mahogany. Signed and dated lower right: Felix Hollenberg 1905. Set in a profiled, gilded wooden frame of the period. Felix Hollenberg is considered one of the most sensitive practitioners of Southern German plein air painting and etching around the turn of the century. After studying at the academies in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart, he devoted himself intensively to capturing the atmospheric beauty of the Swabian Alb and the river landscapes of southern Germany. This painting from 1905, executed on a fine mahogany panel, captivates with its panoramic vista and masterful capture of the atmospheric evening mood. In the foreground, two tall poplars provide a striking vertical accent against the gently rolling hills through which a tranquil river winds. With loose brushstrokes and a nuanced palette of earthy green, ochre, and delicate shades of pink and gold in the evening sky, Hollenberg succeeds in creating a composition of great natural tranquility. H x W: 46/58 cm. Frame, H x W: 65/45 cm. Overall original condition. The mahogany panel is very well preserved, flat, and stabilized on the reverse side as required by its construction. In the upper sky area, there is a localized layer separation/paint flaking typical of the work’s age, accompanied by fine craquelure.
