ÉMILE GALLÉ “Art Nouveau Vase with Alder Catkins Design,” Nancy, ca. 1900. Spherical, frosted glass with an amber-colored and greenish underglaze, overglazed multiple times in brown and black-green. All-around deeply etched, finely carved decoration featuring hanging alder catkins and a delicate leaf pattern on a warm, honey-yellow-amber background. A Japanese-style relief signature “Gallé” is deeply etched on the side of the body. Spherical, bulbous form with a slightly indented, cylindrical neck and flared rim. The expressive relief decoration features filigree-like, botanically precise depictions of alder catkins and branches against an atmospheric, translucent background. A masterful piece from the heyday of the Établissements Gallé. H: 14 cm. Good overall condition. The rim of the mouth has old damage and has been expertly covered/restored with a later silver mounting.
