Stone Carving. – J.-B. (Jean-Baptiste) de la Rue. *Traité de la Coupe de Pierres*. A Simple and Concise Method for Mastering This Craft. Atlas, (4th ed.). Paris, Roret, (1858). Folio. Binding. Frontispiece by Thomassin, title page, 1 leaf, and 97 (1 folded) copper plates, numbered 1–67, A–F, as well as 24 supplementary plates. Mounted. Paperback. See Brunet III, 852. Libri rari 164. Cicognara 658 (“Opera magnifica”). Nexus Network Journal, Vol. 13, Oct. 3, 2011, pp. 649–670. – A classic illustrated work (here without the text volume) on stone and joint cutting, taking into account the historical contributions of P.H. Delome and M. Jousse, covering stairs and vaults, lintels, and all types of vaulted surfaces (portals, niches), intersections and the convergence of surfaces. The work’s long-standing relevance (most recent edition in 1977) underscores the significance it has held across generations as a guide for technically skilled stonemasons: editions in 1728, 1738, 1764, followed by the 4th edition presented here (not documented in any postwar German auction, currently unavailable worldwide). – Only the first few pages have corner stains; otherwise clean with very good printing. The paperback is stained with a few defects along the edges and spine.
