Munich, early view, before 1638. Copperplate engraving, with the following text printed along the bottom margin: *Vue de la Grande Place à Munich*—later Schrannenplatz, following the installation of a statue of the Virgin Mary on the freestanding column at Marienplatz. Historically colored; traces of former mounting in the white margin; slight foxing, especially in the lower text area; reinforced edges, including on the reverse; overall in good condition. 26.3 × 39.7 (29.8 × 44.1) cm. The column, the focal point of the historic square, was not crowned with a statue of the Virgin Mary until 1638, out of gratitude for the sparing of the Bavarian cities of Munich and Landshut during the Thirty Years’ War.
