Marini, Leonardo (c. 1730 – after 1797). Costume designs. 2 watercolors. Standing figure of a gentleman carrying a saber in courtly attire; largely identical poses, different costumes; likely a theatrical portrait. 26.7 × 19.8 and 26.8 × 20 cm. The earliest documented costume designs by the Piedmontese painter Leonardo Marini date to 1769; thereafter, until 1776/77, he was likely at least partially in the service of King Vittorio Amadeo III of Sardinia. The approximate dates of his life, according to Thieme/B. Christie’s New York auction, Jan. 11, 1989, cat. nos. 77ff., are supported by the artist’s costume designs for the Teatro Reale in Turin; this album also features a figure carrying a saber in two costume variations (the aforementioned catalog is available for inspection at our office).
