Lüpertz, Markus (b. 1941). *Steelpoints and Poems*. Special edition. San Francisco, Limestone Press, 1989. Folio. Text and 13 loose sheets with 11 (10 two-color) signed and numbered drypoint etchings by Markus Lüpertz on plates. Original cover and antique slipcase with a mounted two-color etching. Hofmaier 139–150 and figs. 62–65. Papiergesänge 158. – Number 1 of 10 (60 total) copies of the special edition on heavy Arches-Vélin paper, featuring an additional, revised, signed drypoint etching with aquatint, included in the above count. Lüpertz “created the plates for the etchings, in black and reddish-brown, in Germany in the fall of 1988… then sent them to San Francisco, where Jill Livermore and Yoshiko Shimano of Limestone Press produced the print run” (Hofmaier). – “Like many contemporary artists, Lüpertz was keen to express himself through both poetry and visual art. In this work, created during the period when he was engaged in a series of stained-glass windows for the Cathedral of Nevers, he combines the two very successfully” (Ursus Books, New York, catalog of the Stuttgart Antiquarian Book Fair). The etchings are accompanied by a total of ten poems, with Lüpertz’s texts translated into English by H. Müller-Sievers and Cheryce Kramer. – This exceptional copy is in very good condition and includes the original brochure from Limestone Press.
