Mounted on paper, inscribed there by an earlier hand as “mad. De La Ane.” – The miniature painter Anna Louisa Lane is listed in Thieme/B. with the following exhibitions: 1769–1776 Society of Artists, 1778–1782 Royal Academy. The British Museum notes a family connection (“related”) to the miniaturist William Lane (1746–1819); Thieme/B. describes her as “probably his sister,” citing the same address. Blättel, p. 554, mentions oil paintings in addition to miniatures on ivory. – The present drawing is a masterpiece executed with the finest brush, gracefully expanding the artist’s portraiture into the realm of genre painting.
