Kobell, Franz (1749–1822). Rocky landscape with a river; a horseman on the left. Drawing. Ink pen, sepia, mounted on cardboard. 19 × 25.5 cm. Thieme and B. note regarding Kobell’s drawings “an impression of storminess,” and Nagler describes them no less vividly: “He rendered the creations of his imagination lightly, freely, and wittily… and then rendered them in sepia or bistre with the necessary interplay of light and shadow.” The way in which he dissolves the masses and renders them sketch-like and transparent is evident in this sheet, aided here by the rather unusually large format.
