Decorative Models. A collection of figurative representations, decorative arts motifs, sculptural ornaments, decorative animal and plant motifs… for draftsmen, painters, graphic artists, decorators… Volumes 1–3. Stuttgart, J. Hoffmann, 1890–92. Small folio. 3 illustrated half-leather volumes, each with a title page, 1 leaf, and 60 plates, mostly in chromolithography. Prause 174 (published 1890–1928; complete series documented in only one German art library; only 2 known copies in total). Catalog of Reference Works of the Berlin Art Library 267 (from Vol. 7 onward). Schneider-Henn, Ornament 140–152: “The beginning of a far-reaching undertaking that provided inspiration and models for several generations of decorators up to 1928. Thanks to effective distribution, the influence of these models reached all of Europe, including through collaboration with similar ventures in France, Italy, and Great Britain.” – A well-preserved collection, also featuring examples of the emerging Art Nouveau style. One plate is missing from Vol. 3 (1892); each plate bears a handwritten ownership notation by the Swiss architect Alfred Hodler (1851–1919), Director of Public Works for the City of Bern from 1888 to 1894. – Enclosed: Ibid., Vol. 4, 1893, title page and 1 sheet, 52 (of 60) plates in an illustrated wood-grained folder, along with 5 plates from other volumes and 4 additional plates.
