Antiquity. – F. Creuzer. A Selection of Unglazed Greek Pottery Vessels from the Grand Ducal Baden Collection. Heidelberg, C.F. Winter, 1839. 130 pp., 1 leaf, and 10 lithographic plates, some of which fold out to poster size. Contemporary half leather, gilt edges. For nearly four decades, Friedrich Creuzer (1771–1858) conducted research and taught in Heidelberg; he was highly praised by Stark for his “extensive erudition in antiquities” (B. Stark, *Archaeology of Art*, 1870, p. 167; biography of the scholar ibid., pp. 262ff.). With this volume, the author offered a perspective on Greek mythology and symbolism that transcended the formal-aesthetic approach that had prevailed until then. – Bibliography: B. Stark, Friedrich Creuzer, His Education and His Scholarly and Academic Significance, Heidelberg 1874.
