Gorny & Mosch

2987 - ASIA. KOREA. Yi Hyong (Kwang-Mu from 1897), 1864–1897–1907. Warning white metal pattern coin, ø 37 mm (15.93 g). Year 495 (1886). KM Pn17. RR! Extremely rare! Magnificent specimen! Fine patina, mint luster, nearly proof-like. Graded by NGC as MS 63 (8591239-001 MS 63). This numismatic rarity is a pattern coin from the first series of modern machine-struck coins in Korean numismatic history. This proof coin is the result of an effort to improve the Korean monetary system. At the time of its creation, copper coins with square holes were predominantly in circulation. To improve the existing system, the government appointed the German Paul Georg von Möllendorff—who had been serving as an advisor in Seoul since December 1882—as director of the state mint, Chonwankuk. Paul Georg von Möllendorff himself commissioned engineers from the Osaka Mint in Japan to modernize the coinage system.
