GERMAN COINS AND MEDALS UP TO 1871. JÜLICH–KLEVE–BERG. Johann Wilhelm II of the Palatinate, 1679–1716. Düsseldorf counter-stamp on guilders from 1691, ø 37 mm (15.76 g). 1690, Glückstadt. Circular overprint of a “left-facing, single-tailed, and uncrowned lion” on a 2/3 taler (guilder) from Holstein-Plön (Johann Adolf, 1671–1704). Noss 799. See also 570 (there without countermark) Friederich 161. Lange, see 760b (there without countermark) RR! Extremely rare! Slight blankstrike defect on the edge; slightly worn but very fine; countermark: very fine—excellent. Provenance: From an old collection with a slip of paper. In the summer of 1691, the Düsseldorf government decreed that Master of the Mint Longerich should re-stamp circulating guilders whose fine weight was below the Leipzig standard with a lion as an overprint. To date, Noss and Friederich have been able to identify three known examples of this extremely rare counter-stamp type.
