Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) – Job. 1900. Masters of the Poster. Original poster, lithographic print, unmounted. Plate size: 29.5 x 22.5 cm; sheet size: 40.9 x 29 cm. Grade A. The most famous Art Nouveau poster artist created several illustrations for Job cigarette paper, owned by the Bardou family. This one is the best known, both for the richness of its printing—featuring extensive gilding—and for its sensual, almost erotic model. A scandalous gesture, since during the Belle Époque, a woman smoking tobacco was no small matter. The idea is that this woman, like tobacco, is meant to turn men’s heads. True to the oath he took when he became a Freemason in the Grand Orient de France, he always championed the art of beauty accessible to all.
