Ludwig Holwein (1874–1949) – Burger Kehl Lausanne. 1908. Original poster, lithograph, mounted on canvas. Condition A–: two small scratches, minor flaws in the mounting. 60 x 45 cm. This was a men’s tailor who became a clothing manufacturer, starting out in Zurich, Switzerland, before experiencing growth that led him to expand into Germany. The brand quickly recognized the value of advertising and distinguished itself by commissioning innovative poster artists such as Holwein and Leonhard Fries, who created numerous designs for them and significantly contributed to their success. In its very modern and minimalist composition, one can nevertheless immediately recognize the fashion and sartorial art of the era, when—despite the apparent modernity of the style—people were still riding in horse-drawn carriages.
