Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962) – Monte Carlo, Bouquet of Flowers. 1948. Monaco National Printing Office. 98 x 63 cm. Original poster, offset print, mounted on canvas. Grade A. While this tourist poster promotes the city of Monaco, the artist also highlights the Côte d’Azur’s long tradition of flower cultivation. Particularly prevalent in neighboring towns such as Nice, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Cannes, and of course Grasse, these flowers evoke for tourists the sense of abundance and sunshine found along the shores of the Mediterranean. It is worth noting that the bouquet is held by a nude young woman in a clearly unapologetic erotic pose. She is the artist’s model from that time, Nadine Lhopitalier, who would later become Nadine de Rothschild.
