G. Rudd (active in the first half of the 20th century) - Ménetrel Snails. Circa 1946. Printed by Gaillard. 161x121 cm. Original poster, lithographic print, unmounted. Condition A-, a small tear at the end of margin XXX. . Snails are a rare subject in the world of posters and advertising. Even rarer are Burgundy snails. Yet they are a national emblem of France and its gastronomy, known throughout the world. This image encapsulates the history of this producer, this culinary legend, and the “chef to kings,” Alexandre Dumaine. He is featured in the image, and rightly so, since at his restaurant La Côte d’Or in Saulieu, he revived traditional Burgundian cuisine and introduced it to stars from around the globe—just like other great chefs of his era, such as Fernand Point, André Pic, and even Bernard Loiseau, who succeeded him. The Ménetrel company, for its part, benefited greatly from this international exposure and became one of the leading exporters of the snail. Starting in 1946, the company experienced a period of expansion that lasted until the 1990s, when it relocated to Foucherans in Franche-Comté. Needless to say, today this is a poster that every traditional French brasserie and restaurant should have hanging on its walls.
