[Joseph SIMA]. In the Time of Jesus Christ. Czechoslovak Folk Tales translated into French by Louise-Denise Germain. Preface by Charles Vildrac. Woodcuts by Joseph Sima. Paris, printed by Kauffmann, 1932. Large 8vo, black half-maroquin with stripes, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved. First French edition: illustrated with 10 full-page black woodcuts by Joseph Sima. Limited edition of 350 copies: one of the 50 head copies on old Japanese paper, enhanced with a set of engravings in their first state (no. XVI). As early as 1922, fashion designer and bookbinder Louise-Denise Germain (1870–1936) collaborated with her future son-in-law, the painter Joseph Sima, on the creation of this volume, selecting the tales and translating them. Sima had arrived in France in 1921; he married Mrs. Germain’s daughter in 1923. A fine copy. The spine of the cover is worn. (Le Bars, Louise-Denise Germain, Bookbindings, BnF, 2017, pp. 12 and 33.)
