Jean PAULHAN. *Le Guerrier appliqué*. New edition. Paris, Édouard Sansot, 1919. In-12, paperback. Second printing (?) of the original edition published in 1917 at the author’s expense. A beautiful autographed copy dedicated to Henri Michaux on the half-title page: To H.M. / so that he / may rewrite it / his friend / JP A leading figure behind the scenes at the *Nouvelle Revue Française*, where he served as secretary beginning in 1920 and then as editor-in-chief following the death of Jacques Rivière in 1925, Jean Paulhan (1884–1968) welcomed Henri Michaux to Paris. Fifteen years his senior, by the late 1920s he had become “Michaux’s privileged correspondent (two hundred letters), serving as both his first reader and confidant” (Jean-Pierre Martin). Michaux said of him: “He was my best reader for a long time.” The inscription on *Le Guerrier appliqué* was likely added several years after the book was published. Spine worn.
