Henri MICHAUX. A Pulley. [1942]. Original color watercolor, signed (31.5 x 22.5 cm), framed. A superb original composition first reproduced in 1946 in *Peintures et dessins*, No. 28, with the title *Un Palan* and the following comment: “The Palans provide the sword-swallowers and the dust-suckers...” The watercolor is described as coming from the author’s collection, dated 1942. The caption is taken from *Voyages en grande Garabagne* (1936). It was first reproduced in the *Poètes d’aujourd’hui* volume in 1969 (page 141). From the collection of [Geneviève] Bonnefoy. The watercolor later belonged to Yoshihisa Tsuruoka, who had transformed his Tokyo apartment into the “Michaux Museum.” It was resold in Paris in 2009. A work titled *Palan* was featured in the Henri Michaux exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Charleroi in 1971 (no. 17 in the catalog, with reproduction), then in the exhibition at the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in Brussels in 2016 (p. 30 of the catalog) and finally at the Wallonia-Brussels Center in Paris in 2017.
