[Henri MICHAUX]. Gisèle FREUND. Portrait of Henri Michaux. Undated [1939]. Original photograph, silver print (29.1 x 20.9 cm). A remarkable and famous portrait of Henri Michaux by Gisèle Freund: on the back of the mount is the photographer’s stamp bearing her address in Buenos Aires, where she was in exile. The image was taken in 1939. Faced with the rise of Nazism, the photographer was forced into exile and settled in Buenos Aires in 1941. Very skillful restorations. The cardboard on which the image was mounted has been replaced; the original cardboard has been preserved along with the stamps: Foto Gisèle Freund, Tres Sargentos 436 / Buenos Aires. From the Skira Collection (Geneva, Christie’s, November 13, 2000, no. 88).
