A rare portrait by Gisèle Freund showing the writer in a three-quarter view from a low angle, cigarette in hand: a beautiful contemporary chromogenic print. Autograph inscription in brown ink on the reverse: Copyright by Gisèle Freund 18, rue de l’Odéon Paris 6 Henri Michaux Gisèle Freund (1908–2000), along with Brassaï, Claude Cahun, and Paul Facchetti, was among the handful of photographers tolerated by Michaux; she remained close to him. Thus, on April 15, 1970, she thanked Michaux for the “wonderful ink” he had given her.
