Henri MICHAUX. Untitled. [Circa 1937–1938]. Original gouache on a black background, signed (31 x 24 cm), framed. Superb original gouache on a black background, signed: on the back is a handwritten dedication signed “For Georgette Fourcade / a tribute from an old friend / H. Michaux.” It was featured in 1999 in the Henri Michaux exhibition at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (no. 74, with reproduction on p. 74), and then in the exhibition “Henri Michaux & Zao Wou-Ki: In the Empire of Signs” at the Martin Bodmer Foundation in Geneva in 2015 (no. 67, with reproduction on p. 80 of the catalog). “Michaux curiously paints on black backgrounds—hermetically black. Black is his crystal ball. From black alone, he sees life emerge—a life entirely invented” (Peintures).
