Paul ÉLUARD. Poetry and Truth 1942. Paris, Éditions de la Main à Plume, 1942 In-12, paperback, cloth-bound cover, full margins: preserved in a red half-morocco slipcase with bands by J. Liekens. First edition. To circumvent censorship, the “printed” date was set as April 3, 1942—even though the book was completed in September. One of 30 copies on gray Ronsard paper (no. 36), preserved with all margins intact. First publication of “Liberté,” appearing at the beginning of a semi-clandestine pamphlet produced by a group of young Surrealists and Resistance fighters. With a lyricism reminiscent of song, easy to memorize and spread by word of mouth, “Liberté” embodied the quintessential model of contraband poetry. It was set to music by Francis Poulenc shortly after the war. (Literary Archives under the Occupation, p.: “Recklessly displayed in the window of the Gallimard bookstore on Boulevard Raspail, the booklet caught the attention of a German officer, who demanded its immediate removal.”)
