René CHAR. *Les Compagnons dans le jardin*. 1956. Typescript with handwritten corrections and additions, titled, signed, and dated, 4 pages, in-4 (minor tears at the margins of the pages). Working draft of the first poem opening the eponymous collection, published by Louis Broder in 1957 and illustrated by Zao Wou-Ki: about fifteen handwritten corrections, including nine lines on a pasted-on tab, with a handwritten title, signature, and date. Among the variations are a few crossed-out and corrected words, including an entire paragraph rewritten: “Turn, leap, newlywed—it was lightning, opulence; it is, at most, the rose,” becoming: “Lightning and rose, within us, in their fleetingness, for our fulfillment touch, join, add, join.” In the final version, Char will retain “add.” Several sentences have not yet been composed (corresponding to 11 printed lines); the poem, which ends here with: “In our gardens, forests are taking shape,” will be followed by two others in the final text.
