René CHAR. *Le Poème pulvérisé*. Paris, Fontaine, 1947. Large 8vo, tab-bound, black morocco, smooth spine, title in red letters on mosaic-patterned marbled calfskin pieces on the front cover, black morocco linings, burgundy suede endpapers, cover and spine preserved, presentation box in half black morocco (Annie Boige, 2008). First edition: limited to 1,265 copies. One of the 65 first-edition copies printed on Johannot pure-thread paper (No. 19 HC), accompanied by an original engraving by Matisse, unsigned here. Antoine Coron notes Matisse’s disappointment upon receiving the book: “which undoubtedly explains the small number of proofs signed by him.” (Coron, René Char, no. 145: “The most significant collection of the immediate postwar period.” —John Bidwell, *Graphic Passion. Matisse and the Book Arts*, 2016, no. 33.) The frontispiece is reprinted on the title page; the cover and spine are made of reattached paper.
