Gaston CHAISSAC. Letter with a drawing to a friend. No place or date [Spring 1947?]. Signed autograph letter with an original signed drawing, 1 page in-4, in pencil on lined paper, drawing on the reverse (file holes). A beautiful letter illustrated on the reverse with a large pencil drawing depicting a quasi-Cubist figure sporting an enormous beard, resembling a sort of large oval breastplate. As is often the case, Gaston Chaissac describes his daily life in Sainte-Florence-L’Oie, mentioning his neighbors and worrying that he might have caught a cold the previous day at the movie theater “where they were showing a film with Bourvil in the role of a country man [*Pas si bête*, directed by André Berthomieu?]. Peasant common sense is a myth. […] I planted a few more little peas [sic] before heading to the movies in a doubly rural atmosphere.” The rainy weather might not be conducive to their germination. Finally, in the margin, Chaissac adds: “People keep making fun of me and using my name to entertain the crowd…” “Chaissac’s letters—which are fables and hoaxes, jokes, and genuine cries for help—are wonderfully poetic” (Yves Peyré).
