Gyula Halász, known as BRASSAÏ. *The Story of Marie*. With an introduction by Henry Miller. Paris, Le Point du Jour, 1949. In-12, paperback: red paper slipcase. First edition: one of the 126 limited-edition copies printed on Alma du Marais paper (copy I), the only ones accompanied by an etching by Brassaï, signed and numbered. A warm, autographed dedication signed beneath the proof: To my dear friend Henri Michaux, this Marie who can offer him nothing but “the space outside”… In friendly remembrance from Brassaï Paris, May 9, 1949 Former companions in the Montparnasse bohemian scene, the two friends spent time together almost every day in the 1920s, shortly after they met: the Hungarian-born painter and photographer Gyula Halász, known as Brassaï (1899–1984), humorously recalled those lean years: “We were both equally penniless, and we often had nothing to eat but a dish of potatoes, prepared in secret on my landlady’s stove. But back then, Michaux was passionate about yoga and never stopped extolling the benefits of fasting.” “The outer space” mentioned by Brassaï in the preface refers, of course, to *L’Espace du dedans* (1944) by Michaux—Brassaï being one of the very few photographers admitted by the poet. The copy is in perfect condition.
