JOHANNES ZECHNER (1953 Klagenfurt, based in Graz) Stay Home!, 1983 Egg tempera on canvas. 126 x 104 cm. Framed. Signed lower left. Signed, dated, and titled on the reverse. Zechner is one of the most important representatives of “New Painting” in Austria—the generation that, around 1980, rediscovered color, figuration, and a deliberately simple formal language. Nine identical houses stand in a strict grid across the light-green surface, each depicted only as an orange-red outline with a pointed roof, cream-colored on the inside and featuring a vertical row of small yellow windows. The work is executed in egg tempera, an ancient technique featuring matte, chalky, luminous colors that lend the childlike, simple forms their freshness. An orange-red strip frames the whole composition like a picture within a picture. Order is depicted here, but not imposed: it stands still, while life creeps through it.
