HEINZ ZANDER (1939 Wolfen – 2024 Leipzig) Holy Man with an Evil Woman, 2003 Oil on hardboard. 60 x 50 cm. Framed. Monogrammed and dated in the lower right corner. Titled, signed, and dated on the reverse. Heinz Zander studied from 1959 to 1964 at the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig under Bernhard Heisig and was a master student of Fritz Cremer in Berlin from 1967 to 1970. He subsequently worked as a freelance artist in Leipzig. Influenced by the Leipzig School, Zander developed an independent, fantastical, and symbolic visual language early on, in which art-historical, literary, and scientific references are combined with a vivid imagination. In “The Temptation of the Saint,” a female figure standing motionless against a tree encounters the saint, who is being harassed by demonic beings. The grotesque creatures embody temptation, while the butterfly appearing behind his shoulder can be interpreted as a symbol of detachment. The dynamic, richly detailed composition combines Zander’s fantastical visual world with multi-layered symbolism.
