CORNELIUS VÖLKER (Born in Kronach in 1965; based in Düsseldorf) Great Swimmer, 1994 Acrylic on cardboard. 42 x 59.5 cm. Signed and dated on the reverse. Cornelius Völker was a master student of A. R. Penck and Dieter Krieg and is a professor of painting at the Münster Academy of Fine Arts. His painting oscillates between figuration and abstraction and draws from everyday life; triviality is the order of the day, with the motif serving as a test of just how much painting can endure. In this work, water fills the entire picture, and the swimmer remains only as a point of reference that allows the surface to be interpreted as water. An early example of how closely Völker’s representational painting approaches abstraction—and that it is at its strongest there.
