THITZ (MATTHIAS SCHEMMEL) (1962, Frankfurt am Main; works in Stuttgart and Berlin) Cairo, 2000 Acrylic, photo pigment print on canvas. 140 x 160 cm. Signed and dated lower left. Titled on the reverse and accompanied by a label with work details. Thitz portrays cities by bringing back paper bags from them—shopping bags, advertising prints, scraps of newspaper. He glues these onto the canvas, paints over them, and populates the resulting work with his “bag people”—those quirky figures with large eyes and red mouths. In this way, his paintings contain actual snippets of the city he depicts. It is precisely this combination of documentary material and lighthearted, narrative painting that has made him internationally renowned. “Cairo” depicts the city’s silhouette in a blue-gray twilight—a jumble of minarets, domes, and skyscrapers.
