VOLKER TANNERT (1955, Recklinghausen; works in Cologne, Bonn, and Liguria) Untitled, 1980 Oil on canvas mounted on cardboard. 221 x 160 cm. Framed. Around 1980, a young generation of painters in West Germany broke with the austere conceptual art of previous years and returned to large formats, bold colors, and a swift, deliberately raw application of paint. Tannert is one of the most important representatives of these “New Wild Ones,” and this 1980 work places him right at the beginning of this movement. The cool ice-blue of the background meets a deep-red zone with a jagged edge at the bottom of the canvas. From just a few forms applied with full force, a painting of archaic power emerges—and a format that dominates any space.
