MAX SLEVOGT (1868 Landshut – 1932 Leinsweiler-Neukastel (Palatinate)) The Composer Karl Pottgiesser Oil on canvas. 100 x 78 cm. Signed lower left. The paint layer has a few small areas of loss as well as one larger area (approx. 1 x 0.5 cm); the edges show some wear due to framing and a backed tear (approx. 5 cm). Along with Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt is considered one of the leading figures of German Impressionism. Influenced by French painting, he developed an increasingly free and impasto-like style. The painting depicts the composer Karl Pottgiesser in a deep-red wingback chair, in front of a music stand, a grand piano, and a bookshelf. Painted in warm, muted brown tones, the portrait combines a precise rendering of the face with the loose, broad brushstrokes of the interior.
