FRIEDRICH SCHRÖDER SONNENSTERN (1892 Kaukehmen (East Prussia) – 1982 Berlin) The Peace Hawk, 1953 Wax crayon on “Schoellershammer” 4G-weight paper (dry stamp). 50.7 x 73 cm. Framed behind glass. Signed in lead in the lower right corner with an additional artist’s monogram, dated, and titled on the left: “The Peace Falcon Leads the Angel of Peace to Elysium.” On the reverse: signature and artist’s monogram, dated, and inscribed by the artist: “First Original Sketch.” The drawing was created in 1953, during the early years after Schröder-Sonnenstern began his career as a draftsman, and represents a different approach than the frontally symmetrical heraldic images for which he became known. The animal does not appear to be a messenger of peace. It has the mouth of a predator, and the angel clings on as if on a ride with no turning back—the journey to Elysium looks like a kidnapping. The figure’s dual face reinforces this ambiguity: the one being led looks in two directions at once.
