ARNO RINK (1940 Schlotheim – 2017 Leipzig) Azaleas, 1989 Oil on hardboard. 60 x 81 cm. Framed. Signed and dated (19)89 lower right. Catalog No.: G 98_11 The work derives its impact entirely from contrast: an almost monochromatic, dark pictorial space, steeped in reddish-brown and blackish-green tones, serves as the backdrop for four intensely luminous clusters of flowers in the foreground. They stand out against the darkness like islands of color, creating a powerful spatial and emotional tension between shadow and light. The result is an almost nocturnal, mysterious garden atmosphere—the blossoms appear to be selectively illuminated by an invisible light source, which lends the painting a vital, almost dramatic luminosity despite its dark overall tone.
